Obesity Among Children

Obesity is increasing at an alarming rate in children and adolescents in developing countries like India. It is a general misconception that fat children are healthy, and with age that ‘baby fat’ will go away. But the reality is that 50-70% of obese children will remain as obese adults.

Wrong eating patterns and sedentary lifestyle are the major contributors to the increasing obesity percentage in these kids. Children have a higher nutritional requirement for their growth and development.

As parents we can ensure that our children get essential vitamins and minerals everyday along with good amount of proteins and less fat content in their food. A physically active lifestyle must be encouraged that includes outdoor sports, less time on TV and video games.

Above all, children follow their parents’ lifestyle habits and thus it is very important to lead by example and follow a healthy active lifestyle.
